We believe there are significant opportunities to provide capital and operational expertise to leading companies to help them sustain their competitive position and continue to grow. As of the beginning of 2013, capital markets remain strong, facilitating transaction activity as well as the return of larger (defined as greater than $1 billion transaction value) deals. In the third quarter of 2009, the U.S. economy began rebounding from its worst decline in more than 50 years. Spurred by fiscal stimulus and corporate replenishment of inventories that had been previously drawn down as a result of the economic downturn, we have seen positive real U.S. GDP growth in each of the last nine quarters.12 While we are encouraged by this growth, we believe that to sustain and drive the economic recovery, the private sector will need to play a leading role.
